The
WWS WIAC men's basketball 'player of the week' is UW-Superior student/athlete
Jake Smith ( Jr.-Rhinelander/WI ) who scored 31 points in a UW-Superior 89-79
win against the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds at the Zorn Arena in Eau Claire on
Wednesday ( 2/17 )., then on Saturday ( 2/20 ) facing UW-Whitewater at
Whitewater, found the basket for 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor,
adding two 3-point plays, in a 63-70 loss to the nationally ranked Warhawks.
The Secondary Math Education major, playing forward on the squad, has over 1000
career points, including 26 points in a 98-89 win against the UW-La Crosse
Eagles ( 2/6 ) and is a two-time All-WIAC conference selection.
Smith had a career high 33 points at Minnesota Duluth ( 11/24/09 ) and had 12
rebounds facing the Blugolds at UW-Eau Claire ( 02/17/10 ).

Blue Devil forward Julia Hirssig ( Sr.-Rochester/MN ) is once again the WWS WIAC
women's basketball 'player of the week.'
Hirssig, playing against UW-Platteville and the Pioneers on Saturday ( 2/13 ),
recorded a double-double, scoring 22 points, pulling down 11 boards, in a 74-50
road win at Bo Ryan Court in Platteville., then on Saturday ( 2/20 ) facing
UW-Eau Claire at the Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie, scored the first 4 points
of the contest, Stout leading the Blugolds at the break 36-21, Hirssig adding 3
rebounds, the Blue Devils holding on for a 65-62 conference win.
Julia in 2008-09 was a first team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic
All-American, the first WIAC women's basketball player named first team., First
team all-WIAC, all-defensive team, player of the year finalist and earned second
team D3hoops.com All-America honors.
This season, the senior forward, a Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management
major, is leading the team in scoring, averaging 21.5 points per game, also
recording a team-leading 257 total rebounds, Hirssig finishing the UW-Eau Claire
match-up with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, adding 6 total
rebounds.
When she's not pounding the boards or studying, the 2006-07 Rookie of the Year
who also shared the 6th Player Award, enjoys family, church and volleyball. |

student/athlete Eric Hostetter ( Jr.-Stillwater/MN ) is the men's basketball WWS
WIAC 'player of the week.'
Hostetter against UW-Superior on Wednesday ( 2/10 ) pulled off a double-double,
scoring 23 points, pulling down 10 boards, leading the Blue Devils to a 85-77
road victory against the Yellowjackets at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium in
Superior, the guard shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 2-of-7 from the
distance, also recording 1 blocked shot and 3 steals.
On Saturday ( 2/13 ) on the road facing UW-Platteville and the Pioneers
Hostetter had 21 points, the team mounting a comeback from a 35-38 first period
deficit, falling 75-73, Hostetter missing the game winning 3-pointer at the
buzzer, the ball hitting off the rim, ending the contest shooting 7-of-17 from
the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range adding 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
When he's not pounding the boards or studying, the Golf Enterprise management
major enjoys hunting and fishing. |
UW-Whitewater
Warhawk student/athlete Nicole Bundy (Sr.-Fredonia/WI ) is once again the WWS
WIAC women's basketball 'player of the week.'
Against UW-Platteville and the Pioneers on Wednesday ( 2/10 ) Nicole poured in
30 points, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 3-of-6 from the 3-point range in
a 88-77 win at Bo Ryan Court in Platteville.
Bundy scored 20 points in the first period, made 7-of-8 from the charity line
and captured 6 rebounds.
On Saturday ( 2/13 ) against UW-Eau Claire at the Kachel Gym in Whitewater
facing the Blugolds, Bundy was held to just 11 points, shooting 3-14 from the
field and 1-of-7 from 3-point range, but still managed to come away with the
win, a 62-54 conference victory, giving Whitewater a 17-6 overall and 10-6 WIAC
record.
When she is not on the basketball court or studying the business major likes to
sleep and hang out with friends. |

Falls student/athlete Jake Voeltz ( Jr.-River Falls/WI ) is the WWS WIAC men's
basketball player of the week.
Against UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday ( 2/3 ) at the Karges Center in River Falls,
the junior forward scored a career-high 24 points, in a 76-71 loss to the
visiting Blugolds, shooting 9-of-13 from the floor, adding 6-of-7 shots from the
free throw line, with 1 blocked shot and 2 assists.
Then on Saturday ( 2/6), facing the powerful UW-Whitewater Warhawks ( 16-4 9-3
), after taking a 23-2 lead to open the game, the Falcons ( 9-13 3-10 ) going on
to a huge 69-68 overtime upset of the 6th ranked ( d3hoops.com ) Warhawks,
Voeltz, with 15:54 left in the game, blocked a key shot that went out of bounds,
Voeltz tied for the team lead with 8 blocked shots this season, ending the night
with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the charity
line.
Voeltz in 2008 and 2009 was a John M. Kinney award recipient. |
UW-River
Falls student/athlete Tiffany Gregorich ( So.-Altoona/WI ) is the WWS women's
basketball player of the week.
On February 3rd, facing UW-Eau Claire, the 5'5" guard scored 30 points in a
83-62 thrashing of the visiting Blugolds, at the Karges Center in River Falls,
Tiffany shooting 10-of-12 from the field, making six 3-point plays, adding 4
points from the charity line.
On Saturday ( 2/6 ) facing the UW-Whitewater Warhawks, Gregorich recorded just 4
points, but added 5 assists and 7 rebounds holding the 22nd ranked Warhawks (
D3hoops.com ) to 48 points in a 64-48 Falcon upset.
For the season Tiffany is leading the Falcons in scoring, with 299 points,
averaging 15.0 points per game and is 1st in field goal attempts ( 208 ),
completions ( 103 ) and 3-point plays, knocking in 30. Gregorich is also 1st on
the team in free throw percentage ( 80.8% ) making 63-of-78 attempts. |

Falls student/athlete Wade Guerin ( Jr.-Bloomington/MN ) is the WWS WIAC men's
basketball 'player of the week.
At UW-Superior's Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Wednesday ( 1/27 ), in a 87-72
River Falls loss, the 6' 8" Falcon center poured in a career-high 23 points, on
10-of-15 shooting from the field, knocking in three 3-point plays, adding 4
assists, surpassing his previous game-high 17 points achieved against St.
Scholastica on 11/08.
Against UW-Oshkosh on Saturday ( 1/30 ) at the Karges Center in River Falls (
1/30 ), the Falcons almost pulled off a dramatic second period comeback,
Guerin's game-tying basket coming up short at the buzzer, the center finishing
the contest with 21 points and 13 rebounds, the Falcons falling 71-69.
Guerin, leading the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game, is 1st in
rebounds and field goals made ( 104 ), pounding the glass for 149 boards. |
UW-Whitewater
student/athlete Nicole Bundy ( Sr. Fredonia/ Ozaukee ) for her efforts on
Wednesday ( 1/27 ), in a 68-51 Warhawk loss against UW-Stevens Point, leading
the team with 17 points and 8 defensive rebounds., the forward adding 26 points
in a 75-69 victory over UW-Stout and the Blue Devils on Saturday ( 1/30 ),
shooting 9-of-15 from the field, has earned WWS WIAC women's basketball 'player
of the week' honors.
Bundy, second on the Warhawk team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game,
leads the club in 3-point play conversions ( 41 ), attempts ( 107 ) and has 46
steals, also contributing 83 rebounds, playing in all 19 games.
When she's not studying or working out on the court the business major enjoys
hanging out with friends and sleeping.
The Warhawks are ranked 22nd in D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, with a 14-5 record,
holding a 7-3 WIAC record. |

WIAC 'player of the week.'
The Pioneers guard scored 22 points, on the road, against UW-River Falls, in a
79-65 Platteville victory on Wednesday ( 1/16 ) at the Karges Center, shooting
7-of-11 from the field, including 5 three point plays., then on Saturday ( 1/23
) at the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium, facing UW-Superior, in a 65-78 loss to the
Yellowjackets, poured in 19 points, adding 6 boards.
In the WIAC conference standings Hanson is currently averaging 19.6 points per
game ( 3rd ), scoring 334 points in 17 games. |
UW-River
Falls student/athlete Taylor House (So.-Maple Grove/MN) is the WWS women's
basketball WIAC 'player of the week.'
The Falcons forward, facing UW-Platteville on Wednesday ( 1/16 ), registered 21
points, in a 88-59 shellacking against the Pioneers, shooting 9-of-12 from the
floor, then, at UW-Stout on Saturday ( 1/23 ) played 17 minutes., shooting
4-for-4 from the charity line and 2-for-2 from the field, recording 8 points.
On Nov. 21, 2008 the sophomore scored a previous career-high 19 points and 11
boards vs. Judson University ( Illinois ). |

student/athlete D.J. Marsh ( Sr.-Bayside/Nicolet ) poured in 26 points in a
62-58 loss to powerhouse UW-Whitewater on Wednesday ( 1-13 ), then scored a
game-high 33 points leading the Titans to a 87-75 victory over UW-Stout on
Saturday ( 1-16) and has earned WWS WIAC 'player of the week' honors for his
efforts.
Marsh, the WIAC Player of the Year for 2009, against the Blue Devils made
12-of-17 attempts, was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, adding 9 rebounds and
facing the Warhawks, at the Williams Center in Whitewater, converted 12-of-24
shots, pounding the glass for 12 rebounds, Marsh totaling 59 points this week.
The senior, majoring in Criminal Justice, leads the team in scoring ( 356
points) rebounds (115 ) assists ( 35 ) and steals ( 23 ) averaging 23.7 points
per contest. |
UW-Eau
Claire Blugold student/athlete Hannah Mesick (Jr.-Chatfield/MN) scored 28
points in a 57-33 shellacking of UW-Superior on Wednesday ( 1/13 ), then poured
in 24 points in a 57-53 upset win over 15th ranked UW-Whitewater at the Zorn
Arena in Eau Claire on Saturday ( 1/16 ) and has earned WWS women's basketball
'player of the week' honors.
The 6' 2" Blugold center, playing in all 16 games this season, is averaging 32.6
points per contest, leading the team in scoring ( 281 points ), the conference
in rebounds ( 150 ), averaging 9.4 boards per game and is tied for the team lead
in steals with 19.
Mesick was nominated for the WIAC player of the week honor every week from
November 15 to January 3 of this year. |

student/athlete guard Jerrel Enerson-Matthews ( Sr.-Anoka/MN ) is the WWS WIAC
men's basketball 'Player of the Week'., Matthews scoring 32 points in a 78-53
win over River Falls at the Karges Center on Wednesday ( 1/6 ) and adding 14
points in a 87-81 victory over UW-Platteville on Saturday ( 1/9 ) at the Johnson
Fieldhouse in Menomonie.
Matthews, tops among Stout players, averaging 14.3 points per game, is 1st on
the team in 3-point plays, shooting 26-of-63 ( .413% ), scoring 200 points this
season and is also the team leader in the assists category with 49 ( 3.5 per
game ) and steals with 29 ( 2.1 per game ).
Last season the Vocational Rehabilitation major played in all 25 games and
reached the 1,000 career point total when he scored a career high 33 points at
UW-Superior in a 67-65 Stout loss at the Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior.
Nicknamed 'Mr. Clutch' at Andover High School, the Minnesota native enjoys
fishing, being with friends and listening to music when he's not competing as a
member of the Blue Devils baseball or basketball teams. |

student/athlete senior Julia Hirssig ( Rochester/MN ) is the WWS WIAC women's
basketball 'Player of the Week' for her efforts at River Falls in a 65-68
overtime loss to the Falcons and in a dramatic 86-84 victory over UW-Platteville
on Saturday ( 1/9 ), Hirssig leading all players with 30 points.
Hirssig, the Blue Devils top scorer this season, averaging 20.7 points per game,
poured in 17 points against the undefeated 13-0 Falcons on Wednesday ( 1/6 ),
adding 13 rebounds and 4 steals and was a First-team All-WIAC, all-defensive
team, Player of the Year finalist and second team D3hoops.com All-America in
2009.
Julia garnered first team D3hoops.com All-Central Region honors and was
honorable mention at the Womens Basketball Coaches Association ( WBCA ) and
State Farm 2009 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III State Farm
Coaches All-America Basketball Team.
When she's not on the basketball court or studying, the Hotel, Restaurant and
Tourism Management major enjoys church, soccer and family activities.
