TD Receptions (Week 4) :: 20yds & 1yd
Game Result: Cumberland 28, Northwestern 0 |
Cumberland finally has perhaps its best team in
history and of course it has to be in year 2020 when there will be no state
title games. But that hasn't fazed the leader of this unit, senior Jack Martens.
Martens does everything well. He is one of the best defensive backs in the
state, an extremely dangerous kick returner, and even makes the occasional
rushing attempt from the backfield, but when it comes to catching passes,
Martens is perhaps the best in the state. Last season, Martens caught a WIAA
leading 94 passes on his way to being named all state. For his career, he has
203 catches and counting. Last Friday, the Beavers hosted undefeated
Northwestern in a game that likely decided the HON title. With every defensive
player keying on Martens, he still managed 16 receptions and 2 TDs to lead
Cumberland to a resounding 28-0 win and a share of first with Spooner. On the
other side of the ball, Martens spearheaded a smothering defense that held
Northwestern to a mere 81 yards rushing. Next goal is to go undefeated in the
regular season, but it would have been a blast watching Martens and the rest of
his teammates race around the turf of Camp Randall. |
