Coach Todd Brown of the Macks has been relying on the tandem of QB Andy Davis to WR Derek Watton in the early rounds of the playoffs as Watton has made circus catches in each game.
Now add the power running of a healthy Alex Hiess, and McDonell finds itself one game away from being state champions. Watton's numbers of 10 catches for 141 yards and a 12 yd TD have almost become routine since midseason.
Even with defenses doubling up on the big receiver, he has time and time again found a way to catch any ball that Davis can get in his hands. Hiess has been a known quantity all season but when he went down mid year with
a knee injury, his remaining season appeared to be lost. Coming back slowly at middle linebacker on defense, Heiss gave the Macks the spark they needed to start the playoffs. Last Friday, Hiess returned to the offensive backfield
full time and pounded Gilman for 166 yds and 3 TDs (74, 5, and 1 yd). With Hiess again a big factor for defenses to deal with, it only makes Davis to Watton a more dangerous option in the final game of the year.
